Me: I love you, Scarlett
Scarlett: I love you too
Me: I love you more
Scarlett: I love you most
Me: I love you infinity
Scarlett: I love you DINOSAUR!
And I'm stumped.
HAHA!
4 is a pretty awesome age.

Scarlett's story
Posted in birth, Scarlett on 10:23 AM by Alicia
I can't recall if I've written it before...seems to me I haven't. Either way, it's been on my mind a lot lately.
Her whole pregnancy was a roller coaster ride, I suppose I shouldn't have expected any different for the labor and delivery...
I had preterm labor on two different occasions. After being told the whole time that she would likely be very premature, due to my 'special' uterus, I was very surprised to be entering my 40th week of pregnancy. Still, I was content.
I had a doc appointment at 10 am, so I went to work to tie up some loose ends...just in case...
At the appointment, the doc was really concerned about my blood pressure. I can't recall what the numbers were, but it was enough for the doc to send me for monitoring at the hospital. It was on the way there that the contractions started.
Got to the hospital at 11 am and I was 4 cm dilated. 2 more hours and I made it to 5. The doc, still concerned about my blood pressure, wanted to give me meds to speed along the labor. I declined meds, but allowed her to break my water...big mistake. I had no clue how much the pain would intensify after that.
At 5 pm, I finally made it to 7 cm. I used the labor ball to help with pain and sat there comfortably for a couple more hours. It wasn't until I decided to try a warm bath that I started to feel a lot of pressure. I got excited thinking I was near the end...nope...no progress. At 9 pm, I was still at 7 and I started bawling.
I lost all confidence in myself. I panicked because I felt like there was no way I could go another minute with that pain and no progress.
I got an epidural.
It was never my plan and I feel guilty about it now, but in that moment, it was probably the right decision. At 10 pm, I was resting comfortably, waiting for my labor to progress.
At 6 am, the nurse came to check me and I was at 'a stretchy 9 cm'. She suggested I push to see if we could get to a 10... big mistake #2... but I started pushing just after 6. It was a good 4 hours of pushing without progress and I was SO tired. By the time she actually started to come out, I wasn't sure I could finish pushing. The doctor tried to be encouraging, telling me to push so I could see all the hair she has (she was born nearly bald...peach fuzz is all she had...such a lie) and telling me I was doing a great job.
It wasn't until the last few pushes where things started to get crazy.
I finally pushed her head out and the doc saw the cord around her neck twice. It was never indicated on the fetal monitor. The doc cut the cord and told me to push harder because she needed to be out immediately. Then the flood of docs and nurses came in the room. I tried pushing, but she wasn't budging.
Shoulder Dystocia.
My sweet little babe was stuck, without the cord giving her oxygen.
Panic filled the room. And it all became a blur to me.
I don't even know how long it took, but the doc eventually wiggled her out.
Scarlett was born at 10:53 am.
She was blue and limp and that was all I got to see. She was rushed to the opposite side of the room where there were docs and nurses waiting to work on her.
The only thing I remember is asking repeatedly 'why isn't she crying?' and no one giving me an answer. Minutes passed...seemed like longer. When she finally took her first breath and started wailing, I was at peace.
For the doc, panic continued.
My placenta was stuck. Apparently the whole time I was concerned about my baby, she was trying to help me deliver the placenta. I was bleeding a lot. So much so that she had to take immediate action. I will never ever forget the look on my doctor's face or her tone of voice when she said
"I'm so sorry to have to do this, but I have to stop this bleeding"
The only time I screamed or really made more than a moan during my whole labor (all 24 hours of it) was when she tore my placenta away from my uterus. On the scale of pain I've had in my life, here's how it goes... Kidney stones, this placenta thing, then labor/birth.
I don't remember much after that. I'm told I went pale and started to go in and out of consciousness. They let my waiting family in the room to see the baby and then asked everyone to leave. At some point, I remember a nurse waking me to breastfeed. Honestly though, until about 5 pm that night, I was completely out of it. I ended up needing 2 blood transfusions.
In a word, the day was traumatic.
Between the troubles with the baby (her first apgar was 3) and the troubles I had, I never in my life imagined that kind of birth. Maybe that is why I am longing so badly for a natural, uneventful, "normal" birth. I don't remember much of Scarlett's first day, let along her first few minutes alive. I watched this show called One Born Every Minute and in one of the episodes, there was a birth that was just like mine. I cried. It was incredible to see it from an outside perspective. SO terrifying. (http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/one-born-every-minute/episodes/season-1/episode-2)
We both recovered quickly though. I know things could've easily been different. I'm thankful for my spunky little 3 yr old, even if we did have a rough start. LOL!

Aquarius
Posted in astrology, birthday, Finding me, regina spektor, Scarlett on 11:07 AM by Alicia
Born of a sign that carries water
But in a month that brings just ice
I'm not a skillful water carrier
But I've learned to carry love
learned to carry love
-Regina Spektor
Scarlett had a sensitive morning today. I mentioned it to her teacher at daycare and she said "oh, she's aquarius right? it's all good". Kind of made me giggle... My little 'water' baby. I guess I can see that...her emotions are so fluid... here's what astrology had to say about her :: An Aquarian child will often be totally unpredictable and come up with with lots of ideas; she will also be sensitive and intuitive :: and that she is.
Suprisingly, both of my girls are true to thier 'signs'...mommy, too::
The Virgo in a nutshell-
Virgo exists in the mind, everything is inside. To the world, Virgo presents a calm and collected exterior but on the inside, nervous uncontrolled intensity in the mind, trying to figure things out, how to improve everything, analyzing and thinking. Virgo can tire itself out without even moving! Virgo has a constant drive to improve and perfect, this can lead to extreme pickiness and finickiest. They are pure, their motives are honest never malicious and they want to accomplish something.
It kind of makes me wonder what I could learn about my friends and family if I knew more about thier signs. I can see how I could become a better friend and shoulder to lean on if I understood their thought processes.
I mean, I can't help but question it all, but is sure is interesting, right?

You're Sixteen
Posted in baby, birthday, growing up, little girls, Olivia, Ringo Starr, Scarlett, sisters on 2:19 PM by Alicia
You're all ribbons and curls, ooh, what a girl
Eyes that sparkle and shine
You're sixteen, you're beautiful and you're mine
-Ringo Starr
My little peanut is 16 weeks old today. I know this song is meant for a 16 year old, but right now, 16 weeks seems so profound.
Where did the time go?
She got her first tooth in two days ago... Huge shock to me! Scarlett didn't get a tooth until she was 6 months, so 3.5 seemed far too early to even think about it. Somehow, I think this will be true to her form. I have this funny feeling Liv is going to be our child full of surprises. She's so quiet and alert. It sounds kind of funny to make assumptions about who your child will be when they're only 16 weeks, but I swear, thier personalities develop so quickly. I always knew Scarlett would be happy, silly, a big talker and wildy expressive... Olivia is already very different. My little Liv is quieter, speaking up only when she has something big to say, she is curious, but reserved and a wee bit more dependent than her big sister was. All in all, I'd call her a nice balance to Scarlett's outgoing, wild, silly nature.
It's so interesting to think about these things now. In two years, will I still feel this way? Will they be completely different? Or are these glimmers of characteristics a peek into the personalities my girls are going to develop in their adult lives? I could probably go on and on with this, so I'll stop myself here... I do think about it often though.
Livvy rolls over now, too. She's been working at it for a while, but couldn't quite get her tubby little self over. But that is another milestone she checked off this week.
Anyone know where I can get a 'pause', 'slow', and 'rewind' button? I feel like I need those right about now. I feel like each day slips into another too quickly. I don't have enough time to savor each moment, each new milestone before another comes.
For now, it's a happy 16 week birthday to my littlest and my oldest will be 2.5 years next week.

That's Not My Name

They call me 'quiet girl'
But I'm a riot
Mary, Jo, Lisa
Always the same
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
-The Ting Tings
I think I've spoken before of how cute it is to hear Scarlett pronounce her words. It's fun to hear her emphasis and the syllables that she leaves out. This was never one of them. From the very first time she said 'spider', I knew what she was talking about... my husband did not. He asked her to say the word several times yesterday before he finally broke down and asked what she was saying (through his laughs, actually). I told him that she was asking to play spiders (The Itsy Bitsy Spider story we have on our phones). He laughed even harder... "it sounds like she's saying badass"... Maybe you should be the judge...
HAHA!! Yes, I agree with him that if you don't know what she's trying to say, it sounds an awful lot like badass, so that's his new favorite thing to get her to say.
Oh the goofiness in my house sometimes.

Not Ready to Make Nice
Posted in Dixie Chicks, family, little girls, lyrics, Scarlett on 10:53 AM by Alicia
I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down.
I'm still mad as hell and I don't have time
To go round and round and round.
-Dixie Chicks
Well, she's officially found it. My Achilles heel. And she now knows how to break my heart with two simple words.
It was Saturday and nearing her bedtime. She was playing with her little purse, opening and closing, adding new things and taking others out. I'm not sure what came over her, but she decided to hit me with it. I asked her not to do that, it's not nice to hit people. She turned and hit her dad. I took the purse away from her and told her that we have to be nice and since she wasn't being nice with the purse, she didn't need to play with it right now.
The tears started immediately.
I got up to use the restroom, leaving the two of them on the couch. Adam (who admits he isn't as fluent in Scarlett's language as I am) came to the door to ask me what she was saying. "It sounds like nigh nigh... is she ready for bed?". I told him I wasn't sure and I'd be out in a second.
When I came into the living room, I could see how he would think it was 'nigh nigh'. It took me a minute to realize what she was saying...
There, sitting on the couch, wiping tears from her eyes, my little girl was pleading her case.
"I nice"
Talk about hitting a nerve!! I couldn't give her that purse back quick enough... All I wanted to do for the rest of the night was hold her and tell her that she was a good girl and she *is* nice. I can't even tell you how awful I felt.
So there you have it. Two little words that can bring a grown woman to her knees... well, when said by the right little person anyway.

Colors of the Wind
Posted in Disney, lyrics, Scarlett, singing on 1:32 PM by Alicia
For whether we are white or copper skin
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountain
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind
You can own the earth and still
All you'll own is earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind
- Disney's Pocahontas, Colors of the Wind
Thinking about my song choice for the day, it might seem kind of weird to you. It is a very special song to me, though...
We sang this for our fall concert in 7th grade. It was the very first time I had a *solo* in choir. I sang the whole first verse. It was monumental for me and I think it really was the springboard to my love of singing and music. To this day, I still remember trembling stepping up to the microphone and the slight quiver in my voice when I started. So, when I went searching for something to go along with what I wanted to post today, it seemed natural to add this song.
If I was titling this myself, it'd have been "My Too Cute Two Year Old".
I know there are loads and loads of horror stories about the 'terrible twos', but I think there is a definite lack of stores about what I will affectionately call the 'too cute twos'. This will be proof of the latter...
She opened a gift for her birthday, saw the sunglasses and didn't care about anything else. IT was a cute little outfit that matched, along with some hair bows... she didn't even look at it... all she wanted to do was put on a little show with her new glasses.
One thing that I find incredible at this age is how fast they learn. I'm nearly positive that every evening when I have conversations with Scarlett, she says a new word. I love *love* hearing her pronounce new words for the first time. It's so funny to watch her explore her noises and imitate sounds. SO, recently she began asking something very specific and I nearly fell over... It is *the* cutest (other than 'I yove you') word she says right now...
So there it is...just a little glimpse into a 'too cute twos' moment. Don't get me wrong, we have plenty of 'terrible two' moments, too, but I try not to dwell on those. She's learning about herself and boundaries and compromise and those kinds of things...It has to be hard.

Happy Birthday to You

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear little Scarlett
Happy birthday to you!!!
Yes, this post is a few days late, but I'm kind of glad to get to write it now. I want to tell you about all the little things I remember from your birthday celebrations and all your silliness.
Your daddy and I began celebrating on Friday. We sent texts back and forth all day, remembering what we were doing at that moment 2 years ago... "this time 2 years ago, we were driving to the doctor's office" and "2 years ago right now, I was asking for an epidural". It's kind of fun to play the 'remember when' game. One day (hopefully not too long from now) I'll write out your story for you. I want to give you your birth story and I want to remember each moment and emotion that we felt the day we were blessed with you. I can't believe it's been 2 years...
I will forever remember the look on your face when you woke up and Daddy and I said "happy birthday" to you... it's your pouty/shy face... one of my favorites.

You are such an amazing, smart and kind little person. I am having so much fun watching you learn and grow and playing along with you. It's is so incredible to watch you soak in everything you see and hear...and even better to watch you use it later... like 'bippity boppity boo'...

I find myself often arguing the nature vs. nurture battle with myself. Are you naturally this girly? Were you just built that way? A natural animal lover?

You are so endlessly happy and goofy...it's hard to stay mad when you throw fits. Especially now that you've begun saying 'I love you.' Who could be mad at this face?

Daddy and I talk a lot about the progression of our lives together. Everything happened really quickly for us... you were a surprise, but a most welcome surprise. We have learned a lot about life and love and each other in the recent years and I think we owe some credit to you for that. You have really helped us find our footing in this world, as adults, as husband and wife and most of all, as parents. There isn't a day that goes by without me thanking the lord for sending me such a wonderful gift...my beautiful, happy, healthy girl.
I yove you.
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear little Scarlett

There isn't a day that goes by without me thanking the lord for sending me such a wonderful gift...my beautiful, happy, healthy girl.
I yove you.
I've Learned My Lessons
Posted in family, little girls, lyrics, Mr.Big, Scarlett on 10:22 AM by Alicia
I've learned my lesson
Been down that road before
I've learned my lesson
And the message is you'll never fly
'Til you learn how to fall
-Mr. Big, I've Learned My Lessons
I'm sure it's not the first time this has happened to someone, but it will certainly be the last time it happens to me! I mean, honestly, how dare I question my darling daughter's words???
Last night, Scarlett and I went to my cousin's house for dinner. After she had finished eating, I asked if she needed to go potty and she did. We went to the bathroom and she sat up on the toilet and peed. CELEBRATION!
(She's been doing really well with peeing in the potty. I'm so excited about how quickly she's figuring it all out.)
Anyway... She didn't want to put the pull up on when she was done and I (in my lazy, pregnant state) didn't want to chase her around the house. I sat on a chair and asked her to come put her 'big girl pants' on. She ran around like a mad woman for a few minutes and I mentioned to my cousin how "I'd be worried about her not having underpants on if she hadn't just gone potty." I sure ate those words. Scarlett said potty as she ran by the bathroom and I told her we'd just gone and she needed to put her big girl pants on. Another lap around the kitchen and dining room and she stood in the hall in front of the bathroom. I was distracted by something, turned my head and when I looked back, I was horrified!
Still standing in the hall, she had poo'd on the floor.
Oh. my. gosh.
I can't even remember all the things that went though my head at that moment, but I'm sure it was something like this: Did she really just do that? Why didn't I take her potty when she said it again? I hope this cleans up easily. I'm so embarassed. What a stinker...literally! She's really smart about potty, I guess. Why didn't I just grab her and put the pull up on? Oh my gosh. I can't believe this is really happening.
Thank goodness my cousin laughed it off. She has 4 kids of her own, so she knows how things can be. I'm still in complete shock about it all.
I guess the moral of this story is that you should never doubt a 2 year old. LOL!

Just The Two of Us

Everytime I look at you I think man, a little me
Just like me
-Will Smith, Just The Two of Us
It's really a wonder to watch kids grow. It doesn't seem like too long ago that Scarlett only did four things...eat, sleep, cry and potty. Today, she's developed into her own person. She has her own opinions, wants, likes and dislikes (which she's very willing to share with you) and quite a personality.
The best part of it all is watching what she picks up from her dad and I. On Christmas Eve, I sat in the bathroom and did my makeup. When I got up to get dressed, I came back to the bathroom to see this...
HAHAHA!! It was the cutest thing. She went on for about 15 minutes with different colors and brushes (not actually putting it on, but thinking she was). Maybe it's time to start watching what I say and do...I'd hate to think of my bad habits and words she could pick up.
And then there is this... She got a new toy for Christmas. A princess vanity that has a piano and several small musical toys. I like to think she's musical because I am. I sang to her every day when I was pregnant and still do. We dance and sing every chance we have. I'm so glad to have this little gem on tape. You have to listen close to hear her occasional singing, but it sure is priceless.

The Itsy Bitsy Spider

It never ceases to amaze me how much Scarlett knows. She shows me something new every day. Not long ago, it was The Itsy Bitsy Spider. We sang it at The Little Gym one night and I was shocked to see that she knew the hand motions with it! Of course, I sang it over and over and over again for days...how could you not?! It was too cute. I managed to get a bit on video, but she was getting fed up with me. I just love watching her learn and grow. It's incredible to see life again through a child's eyes. Everything is so much more vibrant.
